Taking Action: Sharing the Planet

Grade 1 took a look around the school to see how trash was handled. Then, we took all we learned throughout the unit and decided to take action!

A sign to remember to turn off the lights at home to save energy!

A sign to remember to turn off the shower while lathering to save water!

A give and take box where you can leave items you don't need any longer for others who would like it to take!

A box full of reminders to turn off the lights and save energy - take one if you need it!

A paper recycling box to give to Grade 3 where they saw a need (and their older brothers)!

A book and paper recycling box for Grade 1!

We also kicked off our end-of-the-year countdown fun by having lunch outside!

Finally, we began our "Teacher for a Day" series where students created a lesson plan and shared their expertise with the class:

In literacy, we are writing about what we are excited to do this summer and in maths, we are using the knowledge we gained in Grade 1 to create our own math games.

Upcoming:

Monday:
  • Bring a board or card game to play!
  • Return ALL LIBRARY BOOKS
  • Turn in Word Study books (remember to not only sort and paste, but practice writing/using your words!)
  • Reading Log check
**Please bring a bag large enough to fit your child's artwork to bring home from school**

Wednesday, June 16th:
  • Last day / Half Day
Outdoor recess can get quite hot now, so please make sure students have dressed appropriately and have hats.

Student Led Conferences, Expressing Ourselves with Poetry, Sharing the Planet, and Flags!

In Unit this week, we finished our acrostic poems for our How We Express Ourselves unit, choosing words that tell what makes us special.

We sorted our Sharing the Planet questions on the Wonder Wall to see which have been answered during our inquiries and which are still unanswered. Then we combined related questions with resources to help us answer them and worked in groups to do the research and share what we found with the class. We answered most of our questions! We finally did a check-in to see what we know with a scavenger hunt. In pairs, we found questions, read and answered them, then checked our answers and moved on. We really were impressed with all we knew!

While all of this learning was happening, students were sharing their learning with their parents with our first onsite/online student-led conferences!

We had a lot of fun sharing our learning!

In maths we thought more about partitioning shapes into equal parts with tangrams and then through the lens of flags.

We then created our own flags.

In literacy, we talked about the story elements: setting, characters and events (beginning, middle, end) and used our writing skills to compose a thank you to the speaker from last week.

In computers, we tried an app called Padlet where we could all add messages at the same time.

A busy and fun week of learning as usual in Grade 1!
